Kunitachi Sakura-Mori (protecting cherry trees of Kunitachi)

In spring, the cherry trees along Daigakudori street in Kunitachi City that are crowded by cherry blossoms-viewers were planted for the first time in Showa 9. The original cherry trees are now about 80 years old. Kazuhiko Otani (current Chief of the “Kunitachi Sakura-Mori”) is one of the citizens who noticed that the state of the trees weakened day by day along with changes in the environment such as an increasing population and more cars.
He began activities to promote protection of these trees, such as calling people to plant flowers for protecting the soil or applying medicine to the damaged bark. The administration, moved by these constant efforts created the “Kunitachi Sakura-Mori” cooperative organization in 2000. Protective activities are held throughout the year including sowing Rapeseed flowers and weeding to maintain their roots. Various citizens, for example students, office workers, and elderly people, share this same goal and gather together to work hard.
