IroriCharbroiled Cuisine UkaiToriyama, Hachioji City
Enjoy seasonal Iroricharbroiled dishes while taking in the changing landscapes of each season.
In the Tama region there are many wonderful restaurants with a sense of entertainment, where you can enjoy delicious meals while appreciating the location and scenery of their expansive grounds. UkaiToriyama, nestled in the beautiful natural surroundings of the famous Mt. Takao-san, a popular sightseeing spot with great access from the city center, is one of these exceptional places.
A shuttle bus is available from the Keio Line Takaosanguchi station, and after about a 7-minute ride along a mountain road, you arrive at this scenic spot where you can hear the gentle murmur of a river. Here, you can take a stroll through the Japanese garden and enjoy the changing seasonal views from the comfort of your room while savoring the seasonal iroricharbroiled dishes. The Ukaigroup, with other locations in Ginza, Omotesando, Kanagawa, and even overseas, also operates a variety of restaurants such as the iron plate cuisine Ukai-tei, tofu dishes, kaiseki cuisine, and brasserie. One of the group’s notable locations is Tokyo ShibaTofuyaUkai, located at the foot of Tokyo Tower. The UkaiToriyama in Takao is the founding restaurant of the group, celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2024.
The dishes served here are crafted with the skill and heart of the chefs, featuring seasonal ingredients and delicious iroricharbroiled dishes. You can enjoy hot, flavorful chicken soup that highlights the umami of chicken, seasonal grilled river fish, and exceptional dishes made with carefully selected chicken and beef skewers. The restaurant offers various courses, including the “Charbroiled Chicken Skewers Course” (8,800 yen, tax included, service charge 10% not included), the “Charbroiled Beef&Chicken Course” (11,000 yen), the “Beef Course” with select Wagyu sirloin (14,300 yen), and the special “Bird Selection Course” (16,500 yen), which requires a reservation three days in advance.
Enjoy a stroll through the emotional garden in the midst of majestic nature, forgetting the bustle of the city
The 6,000-tsubo (approximately 20,000 square meters) grounds feature a charming front building made from reclaimed wood and a main building in the “Gassho-zukuri” style, which was relocated from the “Eccho-Goiyama-mura” in Toyama Prefecture, famous for its traditional thatched-roof houses. Along the winding path that overlooks the ravine, a river flows, and beyond a bridge crossing the river, you will find a detached “sukiya-zukuri” building, a resting pavilion (“Azumaya”), and a river fish grilling area known as the “Yanaba,” where skilled artisans grill seasonal river fish such as sweetfish and yamame trout skewered on sticks.
The main “Gassho-zukuri” building was relocated in 1968 from Toyama Prefecture by the founder, with the intention of providing “authentic” hospitality to visitors who have traveled from afar. The first floor is a space for large gatherings, such as banquets, and is also used as a wedding reception venue. The second and third floors display valuable tools and materials brought from the “Ecchu-Goiyama-mura,” where visitors can explore the exhibits. Additionally, there is a shrine within the Japanese garden where Shinto weddings, including traditional ceremonies, are held. About 50 couples hold their wedding ceremonies here annually.
In this extraordinary space, far from the urban hustle and bustle, you can enjoy seasonal dishes and charbroiled cuisine, accompanied by the warm smiles and heartfelt hospitality of the staff. The tranquil atmosphere has many fans, and it’s a popular spot for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays. Why not visit this hidden gem in the depths of Mt. Takao-san, and savor the beautiful scenery and deep-rooted village cuisine around the irori (hearth)?
