Kurochaya, Akigawa Keikoku Valley, Akiruno City

Enjoy mountain village cuisine and a selection of wines and local sake made with seasonal ingredients from Akiruno, all within a charming, traditional wooden house that evokes a sense of wabi-sabi.

Kurochaya, located by the riverbank with views of the Akigawa Keikoku Valley, is a renowned dining spot of the area. Nestled within a forest, it features a mountain gate, a large waterwheel, and a grand farmhouse built 300 years ago, along with several thatched-roof buildings. At Kurochaya, you can enjoy mountain village cuisine, including local specialties like Akigawa beef, river fish, and local vegetables and wild greens, all prepared with charcoal grilling in a traditional mountain village style.

The restaurant offers only set courses. There are approximately ten courses to choose from: a course featuring chicken as the main ingredient for 7,700 yen, a course with domestic beef for 8,800 yen, a course featuring premium black Wagyu beef for 9,900 yen, and a course with the local brand beef “Akigawa beef” as the main ingredient for 11,000 yen (all prices include tax).

During the summer, meat dishes are available only as “bamboo leaf grilling or ceramic plate grilling,” but you can also grill your own meat at the irori (traditional Japanese hearth) in front of you. In addition, there are options for “children’s meals” and “Okuizome Zen” (Japanese traditional celebration of a baby’s first meal).

The restaurant also offers a selection of sparkling wines, local sake such as “Kishou,” and various cocktails. You can enjoy your meal in a calm atmosphere, surrounded by Japanese-style furniture and decor.

Adjacent to the restaurant, there are also a café and a souvenir shop. Additionally, a luxury villa has recently opened.

On the premises, you’ll find the main farmhouse offering course meals, as well as the tea house “Itoya,” the dumpling shop “Takean,” and the souvenir shop “Suisha,” providing opportunities for a leisurely stroll before or after your meal. Adjacent to the property, there’s also the outdoor terrace café “Mizu no Oto,” overlooking the Akigawa River, where you can enjoy colorful cream sodas, ice cream, cakes, and sweets like anmitsu. Additionally, “Itoya” offers the option to purchase Kurochaya’s special bento boxes.

In March 2024, a luxurious villa named “Fushi” opened, offering one exclusive reservation per day at a rate of 550,000 yen per night (including tax and service). Located in a prime spot with a breathtaking view of the famous Iwase kyo Valley, this villa has already generated significant buzz. Experience the rich flavors and heartfelt hospitality of the mountain village amidst the stunning natural surroundings and historic architecture-something you won’t find in the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy an extraordinary and unique moment that only Kurochaya can provide.
