Brewery-Adjacent Beer Restaurant Kunitachi’s “Mugishudo KASUGAI”
Enjoy a wonderful evening getaway with a fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine, paired with your favorite craft beer.
Located about 4 minutes by bus from Kunitachi Station on the JR Chuo Line, in a quiet
residential area just a short distance from the station, is the Japanese-style house
restaurant Mugishudo KASUGAI. It is marked by a yellow noren (curtain) featuring a
design of wheat ears, and it houses the brewery “Kunitachi Brewery – Kuniburu”
alongside it. The property has a rustic atmosphere, with a kura (traditional warehouse)
and a fire lookout tower, adding to the charm. The operation is run by the longestablished
sake shop “Sekiya,” which has been a fixture in Kunitachi for over 100
years.
“Sekiya,” a sake shop located in front of Kunitachi Station, began its history in 1910 in
the area around Yaho Station, which was then part of the town’s southern district. At
that time, the area near the Koshu Kaido road and Yaho Tenmangu Shrine was a
gathering point, and the town gradually expanded. With the opening of the Chuo Line in
1926 (Taisho 15), the center of the town shifted to the northern side near Kunitachi
Station, and the shop moved to its current location.
Connecting People, Towns, and Culture Brewery & Beer Restaurant
The first-floor dining area, with its warm, wood-based Japanese-modern and casual
atmosphere, features a counter bar as well as spacious table seating. There are also
semi-private booths with partitions, ideal for private dining, and a second-floor private
room (reservation required) that can accommodate groups, allowing guests to enjoy
their meals in the style they prefer.
The brewery produces over 10 unique craft beers, each with its own personality. A key
feature of the beer restaurant is the selection of dishes designed to pair perfectly with
these craft beers. Highlights include “Big Red Shrimp Ajillo”, “Crispy Shirasu and
Cheese”, “Grilled Edamame with Rock Salt”, as well as beer-friendly options like Beerbraised
Pork Belly made with “Momobuta,” a premium pork brand from Kunitachi’s
sister city, Kitaakita City, and sashimi or lightly grilled “Date-Maguro” (black tuna)
raised in the same natural environment as wild tuna in Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture.
“Kunitachi Brewery – Kuniburu” aims to create beer that will continue to be a cultural
experience, like music in daily life. Under the brewing philosophy of “Old is New,” the
brewery honors traditional beer styles while crafting unique beer styles of its own. Beer
lovers should definitely visit this establishment.
